Honeygo Village Dentistry - Oral Surgery
Oral Surgery is the area of dentistry that treats diseases that affect the head, neck, face, and jaws. Most often when discussing oral surgery at our office, we're referring to extractions, including wisdom teeth, as well as procedures such as bone grafting, and dental implant placement.
One main oral surgery procedure is the extraction of their third molars (wisdom teeth). These teeth usually erupt in early adulthood. Many people do not have enough room for them to successfully erupt, causing them to push on other teeth or become impacted. This can cause harm to other surrounding teeth and/or pain; leaving extraction as the best treatment. When having an oral surgeon extract the third molars, a sedative may be used along with localized anesthetic for patient comfort before, during, and after the procedure. If stitches were needed, an absorbable suture is commonly used and will be absorbed in about a week. Post-operative instructions will be given to the patient and patient’s caregiver. In some case general anesthesia, may be used (not at Honeygo Village Dentistry), in which case it is best to have a friend or family member drive the patient home.
Bone grafting is often performed to preserve extraction sites, so there is sufficient bone to place dental implants either at the time of the extraction or at a subsequent visit.
